Online gambling is about to take another “hit” in Germany as there are new proposals regarding the implementation of increased taxes at online slots and online poker a few months before the final regulation of the market.
More specifically, the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper wrote on Tuesday that finance ministries of four states (Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Berlin) made a draft law which imposes an 8% tax for every spin at online slots and a 5,3% tax at online poker. Even though the article did not mention any details of how this tax would be implemented at poker, we can guess that it will be just an increased rake for every pot played.
Note that a few months ago there was a huge criticism regarding the latest decisions made about online slots dictating €1 max limit for every spin, 5 seconds between each spin, no auto-play, and a monthly limit on sports betting deposits of €1.000.
Inevitably, the latest tidings are not welcome by the operators as an 8% tax at online slots would have a great negative impact on their revenue. Dirk Quermann, president of the German Online Casino Association (DOCV) said that this will make players look for a better deal at international gambling sites and the market will slowly die.
