Germany intends to regulate its online gambling market

gerGermany has always been considered somewhat of a grey market regarding online gambling. Until today, Schleswig-Holstein is the only state that online gambling is allowed, where some of the international operators hold local licenses. Even for this state the procedure to obtain a license was perplexing and many operators didn’t even bother to try. However, the German government intends to pass a new regulation that will take effect from the 1st of July and will, at last, allow the legalization of online casinos and poker sites on a state level.

Glücksspiel Neuregulierung Staatsvertrag, the regulatory body of Germany, will implement the new legislation at a slow pace by examining carefully each candidate operator that wishes to receive a license. So far, the regulatory board has announced that the procedure for sports betting licenses has priority as the interested brands will be able to submit applications to the Darmstadt Regional Council.

The new regulations will make the most popular casino games such as slots available to the players. Specifically, slots will have stricter guidelines such as deposit limits and maximum bets per spin, due to the players’ preference for them. The regulator intends to impose limitations on the advertising and promoting of the slots offered by the operators.

The change in Germany’s online gambling landscape is met with content by the front of the players, as it increases the level of fairness and security on the local online casinos. The government’s interference will steer the wheel from a grey, unregulated and sometimes dangerous to play, market to a safer environment that will lead to the attraction of more players. Casinos will gain in trustworthiness and reliability as their payment processors, software providers and bonus policy will be controlled by a regulator.

However, the situation is far from being sorted out. The government’s initiatives are in the right direction but there will be a significant part of the players who will don’t agree with the low casino limits. This means that they will head to the international operators that can prove to be at least shady or scammers and therefore the ‘grey’ approach to the market will continue. The next few months will be for sure interesting for the German online gambling market and if you are keen on choosing a brand to play you can check our list with the best German online casinos in 2021.
